Guests will explore the history of the Stampede Rodeo bronze program, hear expert storytelling, and learn how these iconic bronzes are made. Meet a Calgary Stampede expert, a bronze sculpture technician, and a bull riding champion for an unforgettable experience.

Meet the Speakers
Catherine Laycraft
With 30 years of experience coordinating the rodeo and chuckwagons, Catherine has played a key role in supporting the prestigious bronze prizes awarded to rodeo and chuckwagons champions. While the first bronze trophies were introduced at the Calgary Stampede in the late 1930s, it wasn’t until 1972 that they became an annual tradition. Catherine is well-versed in the unique process of awarding these bronzes, offering insights into the five-year series of commissioned pieces, the program’s evolution, and its current state. Her stories from behind the scenes are sure to surprise and delight, from rescuing and restoring bronzes after the 2013 flood to ensuring a trophy reaches its rightful recipient when unexpected challenges arise.

Chad Besplug
Chad Besplug is a 3X Canadian Champion Bull Rider, Calgary Stampede Western Sports Competition & Production manager, President of Alpha Bull Inc., and a PBR World Finalist who has competed in over 1,000 rodeos. A two-time Calgary Stampede champion, winning the Junior Steer Riding in 1998 and the Bull Riding in 2012, Chad has cemented his legacy in the sport. Known for his dynamic storytelling, Chad shares powerful insights on resilience, perseverance, and the challenges of professional bull riding. Having endured broken bones and setbacks, he speaks candidly about overcoming adversity and the passion that has fueled his career.

Karen Begg
Karen Begg is a talented Bronze Sculpture Technician with a deep knowledge of the bronze-making process and a personal connection to renowned sculptor and bronze artist, Charlie Beil. Growing up knowing Beil, she has unique firsthand stories about his life and work. Karen has consulted on bronze care at the Calgary Stampede and is passionate about preserving its legacy. Karen works out of Studio West Bronze Foundry & Gallery in Cochrane.
